(upon opening my fridge…)
hey you eggplants in there, stop yer whining! don’t make me pull over and have to cancel that ratatouille recipe i’m making tomorrow. yes – you damnwell heard me. that’s right. i said tomorrow. YES TOMORROW. now settle down in there. for god’s sake, just go talk to the 3 heads of romaine.
geeshk… there’s nothing i hate more than a complaining japanese eggplant.
dinner time and much to the eggplants dismay it’s corn tortillas – sans eggplant but with some lovely fresh grilled shrimp, white onion, cilantro and lime. tom keller may be a genius, but sometimes you gotta love tres simple.
so, that and some fresh pico de gallo, which i’ll have you know is español for ‘rooster’s beak’. so see? you learned something today. how excellent. but you know what i’m talking about here… tomatoes, onion, cilantro, jalapeño, avocado, lime juice and i threw in about 3 small ears of fresh corn cut from the cob because i had them (yes, from the csa)… so not your classic pico but it was my ‘pico of the day’ and it was just plain great.
so like nothing new here kids.
but for all this dinner’s fresh mex simplicity, it is oh so very fabulicious. it just is. yes, yes. i know -some fatty dairy whitestuff would send the whole shebang right over the edge into the realm of ultra fabuliciousness, but i didn’t cycle today and i had zucchini bread cake for lunch so no, none of that for me.
and i’d just like to take a moment and point out that this my friends, this is just the very example of the deep deprevation that defines the sad and sorry state of my personal existence – as pertains to food - that can send me right over the edge into a downward spiral, illustrating how life just isn’t fair and that i friggin want the sourcream and queso and can’t have it. so i now ask you people the age old rhetorical question, just what the hell good is low fat dairy anyway? pass…..
and now we’ve once again reached the official ’get over yourself” portion of this program.
ok – officially over myself.
so now on a lighter and more cheerful note, elizabeth, my favorite ex-lawyer turned songwriter was in town from atlanta. she arrived with beautiful red gladiola’s – and shrimp. and cilantro. and avocado’s. so you might find yourself assuming that she was either totally psychic or this was all preplanned and really, i just can’t disclose which it is – except to say that she was extremely welcome in my kitchen which she would have been anyway had she arrived empty handed. but still… thank you elizabeth. you are the goddess of guests and you should visit more often. plus we have the exact same neurotic families where we play similar roles of the youngest loser child with the older highly successful sibling along with a very jewish opinionated mother. (pass the sourcream please – i’ll have a double).
and on that note, all i have to say is: a beber y a tragar, que el mundo se va a acabar. which i am pretty sure translates quite nicely to: eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die.
adiós amigos. hasta luego.

Your opening about the eggplants in the fridge reminds me of an episode of Dinosaurs called “When Food Goes Bad.” Said food kidnaps the baby, then issues this demand: “We want a million helicopters and a dollar. I stand corrected. Make that a million dollars and a helicopter.”
Very entertaining post–and thanks for the Spanish lesson! I’d always wondered what pico de gallo meant, but was too lazy to Google it.

love the opening of the eggplant story. Very creative as is your cooking style. The shrimps sounded so good I think I’ll get some today and try it. Keep writing and cooking.

I can authoritatively state, from personal experience, that this is the most fantabulous pico de gallo ever. I hope Claudia didn’t notice me licking the outside of the bowl, the counter, the table, anywhere this stuff glopped off. Serious good, as were the tacos. I have never had a bad shrimp taco, and these were no exception. Meaty!
